The variety of clematis is tentatively identified as 'Nelly Moser', developed in 1897 in France, and which was popular in Britain by the early years of the 20th century. 'Nelly Moser’ was first recorded in Britain by William Robinson in 1912, though he was growing it some years prior to this date.
If the Benthall Pottery artist has indeed painted 'Nelly Moser’, the date of the vase must be after 1897.
