Impressed SALOPIAN mark, which is the standard mark found on pieces of Salopian Art Pottery. Stamped on bases and low down on the sides of pieces, usually on or near the foot ring. Can occur as a single stamped mark, or several times on the same piece.
The mark can often be hard to read, especially if glazed over, cut away by incising of the design, or very lightly impressed.
Three variations of this mark are known: 1. SALOPIAN – same size letters with oval letter O and A with low cross-bar 2. SALOPIAN – same size letters with circular letter O and A with mid-level cross-bar 3. SALOPIAN – larger initial letter S
This mark was in use by 1882, as evidenced by a dated piece, and was in use until the end of art pottery production in the 1930s.
