NOT a Benthall Pottery Co. mark (Chapman & Sons, Stoke?)

salopian-staffs

Moulded and raised SALOPIAN mark, usually with handwritten pattern number (4581, 4617, 4618, 4346 have been seen), used on transfer-printed teawares (teapots, water jugs).

For many years the maker of pieces with this distinctive mark was unknown. All that could be said was they were likely to be from one of the Stoke-on-Trent potteries, c.1910.

In 2016 a black-glazed teapot of so-called “Jackfield ware” type with gilded decoration was found with an identical moulded and raised SALOPIAN mark (see next page). This piece has a registered design number for 1904/1905, and the word ATLAS, which may refer to the Atlas Works of Chapman & Sons Ltd., Longton, Stoke-on-Trent (further research is needed to confirm this).
